• Things to Do

If you find yourself with some time to kill around the wedding weekend activities, here are some suggestions on how to fill your time in the greater Muskegon area…

Michigan’s Adventure - I feel silly even having to explain this one. We’re amusement park people. It’s the local amusement park. Many of our wedding guests are our coaster friends, if you buddy up with someone who has a Cedar Fair Platinum Pass, you can probably save yourself the parking fee. Also, Meijer has discounted tickets available.

Pere Marquette Beach - There is that whole big lake thing hanging out near Muskegon just off to the west. Pere Marquette is one of the bigger, more touristy places to see Lake Michigan. There are some nice walking trails around the dunes and along the channel into Muskegon Lake, and you can walk out to the beacon light at the end of the channel. The link also directs you to two other city-owned beach spots, both are also worth checking out. However, my favorite place to go to the beach….

Lake Harbor Park - The beach is a little hidden in relation to this park, it’s a little bit of a hike through the dunes and the woods to get down to the beach, but once you’re down to the water, you’re often the only one there. There’s a nice path along the channel for Mona Lake as well. One of the hidden gems around town, much less touristy and more local.

Grand Haven - is just south of Muskegon and has an equally large number of things to visit and see and do. If you want to head down there for a different beach-side experience, there is a nice long boardwalk along the Grand River channel that goes out to Grand Haven’s Lighthouse. And if you’re there late enough at night, the Musical Fountain is a fun show to catch on any given night in the summer.

Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum – Visit and tour the museum, tour the USS Silversides submarine and the USCGC McLane.

Lakeshore Museum Center - If you’re at all interested in the history of the region or Muskegon in general, these are the sites to visit. In addition to the museum, there are a handful of historic sites including the Hackley and Hume Homes.

Grand Rapids Public Museum - We visited over Christmas for the Bodies Revealed exhibit, which has been extended through June 19th. If you haven’t seen one of these exhibits before, it’s really fascinating and not too far out of the way.

World’s Largest Weathervane - It’s a roadside attraction sort of thing just north of town in Montague, but it’s a fun, novel thing to go out and see. Plus, it’s free and not too far from Michigan’s Adventure.

Downtown Muskegon - There has been a lot of change happening downtown with a lot of new and neat things to see, do and eat popping up all the time. Our wedding venues and the hotels we’ve blocked are all located downtown.

If you’re planning to arrive earlier in the week or stay in town after the wedding, let us know. While we’ve listed some things to do around town, we’d also love to make time to visit with as many of our visiting friends and family as we can.

There is a group of our friends who will be going to Michigan’s Adventure on Friday before the wedding. We plan to join them at the park for an hour or two, let us know if you plan to be there that day so we don’t miss a chance to say hi!
